Artist Research - Ernst Haas
Ernst Haas was a well-known American-Austrian photographer. Haas was resolved to become a specialist in his early years, attending clinical school in Austria. In 1947, he changed his mind and dropped out of school to work as a staff photographer for Heute magazine. A photographer who pioneered colour photography at a time when it was thought to be inferior to black-and-white photography. His creative use of shutter speed gave his photographs a blurred look, giving them a distinct motion. According to BBC (2011) Hass once said “Bored with obvious reality, I find my fascination in transforming it into a subjective point of view,” (Haas, 1961). Haas travelled widely throughout his career, photography for LIFE, Vogue, and Look, to name a few of the many prominent publications. The use of shallow depth of field, blurry motion images selective and slow shutter speeds, but also his use of slow shutter speeds, distinguishes him as a revolutionary who was unconstrained by the traditions of his period. Haas was one of the first artists to use the dye-transfer method extensively, and his work has a visual realism that is unrivalled to this day. Despite this, his work continues to enthral and inspire creators and enthusiasts.
